Gentle Living: Finding Beauty in the Slow Moments

Gentle Living: Finding Beauty in the Slow Moments

Wow, looks like we have really taken our time since January 2026 to come to this point to post about gentle living.

I wanted to start with a routine so familiar and yet so easy for us to not appreciate. When I wake up and take my own time in the quiet hours of the morning, something comforting about a slow morning with a warm cup of drink in your hands feels balance. I do like using our uplifting mood booster mist spray on the couch before reading a few pages from a book by the window, I have a special love for lo-fi music and sometimes calm classical music. As the light changes, my dog reminds me about his daily walk and as I set about getting ready the world gently wakes up too.

In a world that constantly asks us to do more and perform, more tasks, more emails, more plans, more goals, more posts, more productivity etc and it sometimes feel like we get lost in that merry go round.

This post is to remind you to just simply to just be here and allow gentleness into your life. The word is so comforting and yet we don't use it enough.

The idea of gentle living isn't about escaping your responsibilities or living a perfectly slow, minimalist life. (I mean, that would be a real experiment!) It is simply about becoming a little more intentional about how we move through our days — choosing moments of calm where we can, appreciating the ordinary routine, and allowing ourselves to slow down without feeling like we should be doing something else.

Gentle living doesn't require a complete lifestyle change. As I observe from my day til sundown there are moments where I could slow down and mindfully observe the moment

  • Sitting down to drink my coffee over bustling around with my mug and cold coffee
  • Opening the curtains to let the sunlight in over getting to my phone right away
  • Making my meals with whole foods over processed and instant food
  • Taking time to explore different routes to walk over the fastest way to finish
  • Reading a few pages of a book before bed or scribble in my sketchpad over netflix
  • Lighting a candle when I am tidying the house over waiting until the task is done

At first it might seem insignificant, but with intention I trust and experience that each create little pauses in my day and sometimes this is exactly what I need

Creating a home that feels like a pause

As a person who loves beautiful ambience, I'm a huge believer that our surroundings have an influence on how we feel and response.

Between a pile of clothes on top of sofa, unfinished paperwork, recycling bins these are things which seems to take away the joy of being present but I have learnt that when you softly lit up your room and put fresh flowers on the table with music playing in the background — these things can turn an ordinary evening of tasks into something that feels a little more special when you address each of the above in an appreciative way, clothes that warm us, paperwork that help us with our progress and even the awareness of the waste we produce looking at the recycling bins. As it becomes a conscious awareness we start to simplify and tidy up our lives just because we have used a different lens to appreciate what was mundane and normal.

For us at Flow Candles, this is where fragrance becomes part of the ritual.

Lighting a candle doesn't have to mean waiting for a special occasion. When we light it, it can simply mark the transition from work to home, afternoon to evening, or busy to still.

Gentle doesn't mean doing nothing

There is a misconception that slowing down means being unproductive. I have learnt that when you set your intention to live meaningfully, you have more clarity of what is important and minimise whats no longer priority.

I hated cooking but now I have learnt to cook something simple from scratch

I use to procrastinate painting but now I just paint to enjoy without criticising myself

I use to feel so much guilt but now I could spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing

I realise I only need to be kind to myself and when I do that I turn a difficult task into one that I take time to care for and now it makes me feel alive

Gentle living can also change the way we think about what we bring into our homes. Materialistic was a very expected lifestyle as shopping therapy was a shortcut to address every single stress

Now, instead of constantly buying more, I have learn to choose only items I genuinely love — being in the artisanal and craft market world, I have learnt to shop from makers with a story, things made with care over hours of love and pieces that become part of my everyday rituals.

Similarly, I recognise this is one of the ideas behind Flow Candles.

We wanted our candles to make you feel inspired and to elevate the joy of living, rather than just a background ambience, it is lighted with the intention to give meaning to your routine and perhaps that is the heart of our message on this topic : making your everyday feel more inspired and kinder

A little reminder

I suppose you can simply start with one small moment.

Put your phone down after this blog post,

Make yourself a cup of relaxing tea,

Light your favourite candle and take a breath to calm down

Stay in the moment for five minutes longer than you normally would.

It is not about doing less but its about not rushing through the things that matter and give yourself the space and kindness to enjoy it
